I’ve just finished Whitehead’s chapter on quantum theory in Science and the Modern World. Allowing for the obvious fact that he’s writing from the vantage of 1925, I found this chapter considerably closer to my own way of thinking than some of what preceded it.
What particularly caught my attention was his treatment of the electron.
The classical picture encourages us to imagine a tiny object orbiting a nucleus, rather like a planet around a star. Even when we know that this picture is inadequate, the noun electron still invites us to imagine some enduring thing which persists whilst changing position or state.
